How often should you change your padel racket overgrip?

The short answer: a fabric overgrip lasts between 4 and 8 hours of play. If you play twice a week, that is two or three weeks. A silicone grip lasts considerably longer.

The long answer is the one that matters, because almost everyone changes it too late without even realising.

The basic mistake: waiting until it looks worn

An overgrip gives no warning. By the time it starts fraying at the edges or turning black, it has not been doing its job properly for weeks.

The first thing to go is not its appearance: it is the grip. The fabric becomes saturated with sweat, skin oils and dust, the fibres flatten and the surface turns smooth. From that point your racket moves slightly in your hand, and you compensate by squeezing harder without noticing.

That comes at a double cost: you lose accuracy on your shots and you overload your forearm, which is where elbow pain starts.

The four signs it is time to change it

  1. You wipe your hand or the handle during the match. If you need the towel, the grip is no longer channelling sweat away.
  2. You feel the racket "wobble" on powerful shots. Especially on smashes and the bandeja.
  3. Your hand gets tired before your legs do.
  4. The grip feels hard or shiny to the touch. A sign of saturation.

If you notice even one of the four, change it.

Table by player type

Profile Fabric overgrip Silicone grip
1 match / week Every 4-6 weeks 6-12 months
2-3 matches / week Every 2-3 weeks 4-8 months
Competitive or 4+ / week Every 1-2 weeks 3-5 months
Very sweaty hands Every week 3-6 months
Playing outdoors in the heat Every 1-2 weeks 3-6 months

These are ranges, not rules. Your hands have the final say, not the table.

Why the material makes such a difference to how often

A fabric overgrip works by absorbing. It is a sponge: while it still has capacity, it grips well. Once it is full, it stops working and does not recover.

A textured silicone grip works the other way round: it does not absorb, it channels sweat away. Sweat escapes through the channels in the texture instead of staying inside the material. That is why its performance does not nosedive halfway through a match, and why it lasts five to ten times longer.

It also changes the real cost. A cheap overgrip every two weeks works out more expensive over a year than a silicone grip every six months — and on top of that you play worse in the last weeks of each cycle.

Signs the problem is not how often, but the format

If you change your overgrip every week and it still slips:

Tips that really do make it last longer

Keep your racket out of the car. The heat in the boot degrades the adhesive and dries out the material.

Dry your hands before, not during. Starting with dry hands delays saturation.

Do not leave your racket wet in your padel bag. Trapped moisture speeds everything up.

Have a second grip ready. The number one reason for playing with a dead grip is not having a spare to hand.

In short

Do not change it by the calendar: change it by feel. As soon as you have to squeeze harder than usual to stop the racket moving, you are already late.

And if you are tired of changing it every two weeks, take a look at the options in padel grips and overgrips.
